INDONESIA: Streamlined Approval Procedures Introduced for Overseas Workers

In a bid to streamline the required work permit/residence approval process, would-be foreign workers are to be permitted to file a single application for both the Limited Stay Visa (Visa Tinggal Terbatas – VITAS) and the Limited Stay Work Permit (Izin Tinggal Terbatas – ITAS) at any overseas Indonesian diplomatic mission, with the required processing time now reduced to two working days. At present, a VITAS application must be made at an Indonesian mission abroad, while the ITAS application has to be made to the domestic immigration authorities within seven days of initial entry to Indonesia.

In other changes, it will no longer be necessary to submit an Expatriate Placement Plan (Rencana Penempatan Tenaga Kerja Asing – RPTKA) to justify the recruitment of a foreign national in certain employee categories (such as director of an Indonesia-registered company). Instead, it will be possible to apply directly for a Work Permit (Izin Mempekerjakan Tenaga Kerja Asing – IMTA).

The changes, outlined in Presidential Declaration No.20/2018, come into effect as of 29 June this year.
