China Bans Production and Sale of Disposable Plastic Products by Stages

China has banned the production and sale of ultra-thin plastic bags with a thickness of less than 0.025 mm and polyethylene agricultural mulch with a thickness of less than 0.01 mm. As well, the production of plastic products using clinical wastes as raw materials, and the import of plastic wastes have also been banned.

By the end of 2020, the production and sale of single-use foam plastic tableware and single-use plastic cotton swabs will be banned and the production of daily chemical products containing plastic microbeads will be phased out. The sale of daily chemical products containing plastic microbeads will be banned by the end of 2022.

Priority will be given to promote recyclable, easily recycled and degradable alternative products and to greatly increase the percentage of plastic wastes recycled or incinerated.

Full details can be found in the Opinions on Further Strengthening the Control of Plastic Pollution (Fa Gai Huan Zi No. 80 [2020]) issued jointly by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on 16 January 2020.
