Shanghai FTZ Waives Statutory Visa Requirements for In-Demand Overseas Staff

In addition to its recent move to attract more highly-skilled domestic personnel, the Lingang Special Area – part of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone – has also adopted a number of measures designed to make it easier and more appealing for non-mainland employees with desired skills to accept positions locally. In particular, certain statutory requirements for work visas / residence permits may be waived with regard to age, education or work experience in the case of potential employees with the requisite skillsets. This would see such individuals granted one-off work permits with a minimum validity of two years. Among the areas where such employees are being sought are technological innovation, research and development and technical support.

Full details of the incentives on offer can be found in the Circular on Supporting the Convenient and Open Introduction of Foreign Talents to the Lingang Special Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, as jointly issued by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology and the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Foreign Expert Affairs.
