A-shares refer to stocks that trade on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges. A-shares are issued by companies incorporated in mainland China and the shares are denominated in Renminbi. A-shares are generally only available for purchase by mainland citizens, but through the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors (QFII) system introduced in 2002, foreign institutional investors who have been granted special permission by the Chinese government can also participate in this market.
