The Belt and Road Initiative refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The Belt and Road Initiative is a significant development strategy launched by the Chinese government with the intention of promoting economic cooperation among countries along the proposed Belt and Road. The idea of Belt and Road was first revealed by President Xi in September and October 2013, during visits to Kazakhstan and Indonesia. Thereafter, Chinese leaders have promoted the idea of Belt and Road in subsequent overseas visits. In March 2015, the National Development and Reform Commission of China issued the Vision and Actions on Jointly Building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which formally outlines the Initiative’s framework, co-operation priorities and co-operation mechanisms.
