CAMBODIA: Extended Monitoring of Garment Sector Called for Despite Renewal of BFC Mandate
The mandate of Better Factories Cambodia (BFC) has been extended until 2019. Backed by the International Labour Organisation, the 2001-founded BFC monitors Cambodia’s 577 garment factories with a brief to flag up any breaches of the country’s labour regulations.
The move comes amid calls for the Cambodian government to step up its own monitoring of conditions within the sector, which has been characterised by poor working conditions. In particular, it is felt that subcontractors – currently outside the BFC remit – are not subject to an appropriate level of scrutiny.
