CAMBODIA: Factory Inspections Set to Rise Despite Reports of Improved Working Conditions

The country’s Labour Ministry is to step up its factory inspection programme in a bid to provide enhanced monitoring of working conditions in the garment sector. The move comes despite the improvement in the sector’s compliance track record reported by Better Factories Cambodia (BFC), an International Labour Organisation-backed agency set-up to monitor working conditions in the country.

According to the BFC report, incidences of child labour, gender discrimination, and forced labour have all markedly decreased, while a more liberal approach has emerged with regard to the freedom of association rights of workers.
