CAMBODIA: Monthly Minimum Garment Wage to Be Rolled Out Across Other Industry Sectors

The US$153 monthly minimum wage, recently announced as mandatory in Cambodia’s country’s garment and footwear industry, is to be rolled out across other business sectors. Although the $153 is to be used as a benchmark figure, actual pay will be decided on a sliding regional scale. This will see workers in urban areas paid at the higher end of the wage range, while those in the least developed regions will be paid at a lower rate.

As well as stipulating minimum pay, the legislation will also make it illegal for workers to strike for higher wages. Although the minimum wage agreement in the garment and footwear sector is effective as of 1 January 2017, no date has been announced for the adoption of this extended legislation.
