CAMBODIA: Online Stock Trading Platform Opens for Business

The Cambodia Securities Exchange (CSX), the country’s national bourse, recently launched an online stock trading platform. Operating out of Phnom Penh, the national capital, and billed as the Mobile Trading System (MTS), the platform will offer investors trading on the CSX a round-the-clock online service, allowing them instant access to up-to-date information on their stocks and giving them the facility to place or cancel orders. The system has been developed in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the external development assistance agency of the Republic of Korea.

At present, only five companies are listed on the CSX with the majority of traders being local Cambodian investors. The launch of the online system forms part of an ongoing initiative designed to improve liquidity in the country’s capital market and to increase the overall level of trading. Earlier this year, the CSX announced a number of incentives open to companies listed on the bourse, including a 50% CIT cut for three years. In what has been seen as a positive outcome for these previous faciliatory measures, the CSX’s daily average trading value almost doubled to US$52,816 in the first quarter of 2019, up from about $26,719 over the same period last year.
