INDIA: 28 August Deadline for Phone Manufacturers to Outline Security Procedures

Many of the country’s leading mobile phone manufacturers, including several overseas-backed companies, have been given until 28 August to provide a written outline of the  security protocols in place at their production facilities. More specifically, an official government communiqué has requested detailed information as to “the safety and security practices, architecture, frameworks, guidelines / standards followed / implemented with regards to the products / services provided within the country”.

The details requested relate to both imported and domestically manufactured devices and will form the basis of follow-up verifications and audits on selected handsets. According to official sources, the move has been prompted by concerns over apparent breaches of data security and the subsequent theft of user information.
