INDIA: E-Commerce Operators Obliged to Collect 1% Tax from Suppliers/Retailers

As of 1 October, operators of e-commerce websites have been obliged to collect a 1% Goods and Services Tax (GST) from all companies that sell products in India via their online platforms. Overseas operators of e-commerce platforms, however, remain exempt from collecting the levy from sellers/suppliers based outside India.

The move is aimed at establishing a transaction trail as a mean of preventing tax evasion on the part of India-based retailers that sell online. In addition, all e-commerce businesses, including overseas operators, are now obliged to register for GST in every Indian state that their sellers/vendors supply from.
