INDIA: Enhanced Regulation Planned for Import of Duty-Exempt E-Commerce Gift Items

The duty-free import of consumer products as gifts via e-commerce channels is set to be subject to enhanced regulation following concerns that this loophole is currently being exploited for commercial purposes. At present, goods valued up to INR 5,000 (US$68) are eligible for duty-free entry into the country as long as such shipments are declared as gifts. Now, among the options being considered, are the abolition of duty exemption for all such items or the number of such gift imports being limited to four shipments per person per year.

A formal date for the imposition of any such measures has yet to be announced.
