INDIA: Government-Certified Hallmark Set to Become Mandatory for Gold Jewellery

As of January 2018, all jewellery in the 14 carat, 18 carat and 22 carat grades sold in India will have to bear an official Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)-certified hallmark, in order that the purity of the gold used can be attested.

To be embossed on all pieces of gold jewellery, the BIS hallmark will consist of an official logo; a fineness number corresponding to the purity level in carat; the examination centre’s identification mark, the manufacturer’s identification mark; and the year of issue of the hallmark.
