INDIA: Randomised Online Tax Return Reviews Introduced in Anti-Corruption Move

The country’s Income Tax Department is planning to introduce a randomised online system for reviewing tax returns. This will see any return where fraud/misrepresentation is suspected allocated to one of a number of centralised tax officials, who will then adjudicate as to its validity and recommend any necessary further action.

The move is intended to ensure there is no direct contact between taxpayers and the adjudicating officials. This is seen as removing the risk of illicit payments being made/solicited in order to secure an unduly favourable tax assessment.

The system is expected to be fully-operational by 2021.
