INDIA: State to Cover Seven Weeks of 26-Week Maternity Pay Period

Salaries for seven of the 26 weeks of statutory maternity leave are to be covered by the state. Although a formal date for its adoption has yet to be announced, the move comes in response to the complaints of growing discrimination against expectant mothers and women in general that followed the statutory maternity leave period being increased from 12 to 26 weeks back in 2017.

To be eligible, for the maternity leave scheme, an employee must earn a monthly minimum of INR15,000 (US$205).
