INDONESIA: Import Process for Textile Raw Material Set to be Eased

The government is looking to ease the process of importing raw materials in the textiles sector. Although no specific measures have been announced, it is expected that any such move will seek to make Indonesia more competitive with other ASEAN countries, notably Vietnam which has a 0% tariff on such imports, compared to the 5-20% levied in Indonesia.

In 2015, the value of Indonesia’s apparel and textile exports dropped by almost 4% to US$3.3 billion, compared to US$3.42 billion in the previous year. The government is also said to be considering moves aimed at curbing the illegal import of cheap textile products.
