INDONESIA: One-Stop Online Halal Certification Service Set for 2018 Launch

Online halal certification will be on offer to producers of foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics following the early 2018 launch of a one-stop government-backed service portal. The introduction of the service is in line with the requirements laid out in the country’s 2014 Law on Halal Product Assurance, which specified that all products in the three named categories must be halal certified from October 2019 onwards.

Under the terms of the new arrangements, responsibility for providing halal certification will shift from the Ulema Council (MUI), Indonesia’s most senior Muslim body, to the government-mandated Halal Products Certification Agency (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk (BPJPH)). Unlike the MUI, the new agency will not charge manufacturers when issuing any required certification.
