INDONESIA: UNECE Standard Set to be Adopted as National Standard for Several Automotive Parts

The Indonesian National Standard (Standardisasi Nasional Indonesia – SNI) is set to be harmonised with the international UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) standard for several automotive parts, including tires, rims and windshields. Ratification of the UNECE standard is expected by the end of 2017.

Currently, opinions related to the extent to which the UNECE will be adopted as a national standard are disparate within Indonesia’s industry ministry. On the one hand, there is indication that the UNECE standard will only serve as one of the references for the SNI along with other existing internationally-accepted standards such as the Japan International Standard. On the other hand, another ministry source indicated that Indonesia’s formal ratification of the UNECE standard will make it the primary reference for the SNI.
