LAOS: Labour Shortages Prompt Re-Opening of Overseas Worker Registration Programme

Unauthorised foreign workers in Laos have been given a new opportunity to go legit, with labour shortages forcing the government to re-open its registration scheme. The programme originally ran from January to September 2016 and saw some 24,000 previously illicit workers granted official status.

More recently, hundreds of unregistered workers have been deported from the country, prompting the current mass worker shortfall.  Although no cut-off point has been specified for the renewed registration scheme, workers already in Laos have to register within three months or face deportation.
