LAOS: Legal Action Threatened in Minimum Wage Compliance Crackdown

Companies that fail to comply with the country’s statutory Kip1,100,000 (US$132) minimum wage will now be liable to legal action, according to a recent announcement by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare. In a bid to enforce compliance, officials have also launched on-site inspections of business premises in Vientiane, the national capital. The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over the rising living cost in Laos, where the average wage for manufacturing workers is among the lowest in the ASEAN bloc.
