LAOS: Opening of International River Port at Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone to Boost Connectivity with Thailand and Myanmar

Authorities at the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ), located in Bokeo province, are planning to open its river port to international freight in 2017. Once operational, the port, which is on the Mekong river, will allow exporters to transport goods to neighbouring Thailand and Myanmar. While the exact date of its opening has not yet been announced, the government is finalising regulations for international freight management and tax collection at the facility.

GTSEZ’s port, which was completed recently, has a current capacity to handle approximately 500 tonnes of freight in the rainy season and 200 tonnes in the dry season. Once upgraded to international status, the inland port is expected to boost trade and investment in the area, which is at the junction of Laos’ borders with Thailand and Myanmar.
