LAOS: Overseas Tour Companies Urged to Hire Local Guides/Operators to Avoid Fines

Overseas tour companies operating in Laos could now face fines if they fail to hire the services of local tour guides. Further, they are liable for penalty if found to have conducted package tours in Laos without partnering with a local tour company.

While the penalties have not been specified, the move comes amid recent reports of package tours being conducted by Laos-based foreign operators without hiring local tour guides. This is also seen as part of the Lao government’s bid to boost the local tourism industry in 2018, which has been declared as the Visit Laos Year.
