LAOS: Telecom Service Providers Banned from Offering Customer Incentives in Bid to Level Playing Field

As of October, telecom service providers will be banned from offering incentives in the form of free handsets, SIM cards and mobile internet packages to potential customers. In addition, a new minimum retail price will be established for all telecom service products, including mobile credit recharges.

The upcoming regulations, issued by the Laos’ Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, are intended to prevent companies from using unfair marketing tactics to move ahead of the competition. The measures have been justified as necessary to ensure the continued stability of the country’s nascent telecom service industry, as well as to prevent the emergence of a monopoly in the sector.
