MALAYSIA: Rubberwood Exports Banned in Bid to Boost Domestic Furniture Sector

A ban on all exports of rubberwood – a light-coloured hardwood obtained from the Pará rubber tree – has been imposed as of 1 July. The ban follows complaints that some US$69.7 million worth of this much sought after commodity was exported in 2016, primarily to either Vietnam or China, causing a shortage in Malaysia.

In the wake of the ban, it is hoped that Malaysia’s furniture industry will have access to sufficient stocks of the material to boost furniture exports to US$2.78 billion by 2020.
