MALAYSIA: Sarawak Imposes 6,000% Tax Hike to Protect Hill Timber

The government of Sarawak state is to increase the tax on hill timber by more than sixty times, taking it from a maximum of RM0.80 (US$0.18) to RM50 (US$11.5) per cubic metre. The new rate will apply as of 1 July.

The Sarawak government hopes the tax increase will discourage logging in virgin forests and force timber companies to source from plantation forests. A blanket ban on the export of all hill timber is also being considered.
