MYANMAR: All Timber Exports Now Channeled Through State-owned Official Body

From 1 May, state-owned Myanmar Timber Enterprise (MTE) will be the only body permitted to export timber from the country. Additionally, all timber exports will have to be paid for in US dollars, while wood purchased with local currency will be restricted to domestic consumption only.

The moves form part of an initiative of the Myanmar government aimed at ensuring a steady supply of low-cost high quality timber for the domestic wood-based and construction industries.
