MYANMAR: Compulsory New Work Permit Scheme Set to Ban Overseas Manual Workers
Only skilled migrant workers will be eligible for work permits under pending new legislation, with manual workers specifically excluded. A cap will also be introduced on the number of work permits issued in each sector, while all such permits will be renewable on an annual basis for a maximum term of four years. After that, foreign workers will have to return to their country of origin and apply for a new work permit.
To qualify for a work permit, foreign workers will have to prove that they are in good health, produce letters of recommendation and possess a relevant degree from a recognised institution.
