MYANMAR: Increased Privatisation and Higher Levels of SOE Support Prioritised by Government

A number of state enterprises are to be privatised as part of the Myanmar government’s plans for the next 12 months. At the same time, greater state support is to be provided to existing state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

While lacking in detail, the policy announcement does underline the government’s commitment to improve the ease of doing business in Myanmar, while also boosting FDI and ensuring the rights of businesses and investors, including higher levels of intellectual property rights protection. Changes to the tax system and further development of the agricultural and industrial sectors are also identified as government priorities.

More specific details of the Myanmar government’s forthcoming legislative programme are expected to be announced in due course.
