NEPAL: Environmental Impact Assessments Scrapped as Industry Gains Greater Discretion to Curb Union Activities and Employ Overseas Workers
Industrial plants can now commence operations prior to completing the previously mandatory environmental impact assessments. The change is part of a raft of new legislation designed to boost investor confidence in the country.
The new provisions, part of the country’s Industrial Establishments Bill, also allow employers not to pay workers who are absent due to participation in trade union activities. Companies are also to be granted the right to employ overseas workers to cover any skill shortages among domestic employees.
