PHILIPPINES: Manila Economic Zones Put on Hold as Regional Development Gets Priority

In a bid to drive the development of the Special Economic Zones in the country’s outlying regions, no further applications to establish such zones within the central Metro Manila region are to be accepted or processed. The move was confirmed by an Executive Order from Rodrigo Duterte, the country’s President, and, as yet, there is no indication as to the likely duration of the ban.

Despite the suspension, investors will still be permitted to develop projects in existing Metro Manila SEZs, while applications to establish new SEZs in the central region that have already received initial approval may or may not get a final go-ahead.
