PHILIPPINES: On-site Audits Resume as War on Tax Evaders Takes Centre-stage

Field audits and on-site visits are to be resumed as the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) continues its crackdown on the country’s tax evaders. Such visits were temporarily suspended in July, but have now been reintroduced as part of on-going investigations into fraudulent representation with regard to pre-2014 personal and corporate tax returns.

The resumed visits come as the BIR’s Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program moves to centre-stage in the country. Following his high-profile and controversial approach to tackling the Philippines’ drug problem, Rodrigo Duterte, the country’s recently-elected President, has announced that tax evaders are his next target. It is hoped that his hard-line will help the government meet its target of collecting US$42.9 billion in revenue for this financial year.
