THAILAND: Factory Licences Extended Indefinitely in Bid to Curb Corruption

The validity of factory licences across the country is to be extended indefinitely under the terms of a proposed amendment to the Factory Act of 1992. At present, factories located outside industrial estates are obliged to renew their licences every five years, a 30-day process conducted via the Industrial Works Department.

Under the new regime, factory operators will have to pay an annual maintenance fee and self-declare their compliance with all relevant safety and environmental regulations. It is hoped that the changes, expected to be implemented in early 2019, will help curb corruption among public officials.
