THAILAND: Maximum Clearance Time Cut to 30 Days in Customs Law Shakeup
The maximum time for Thai customs to approve the export / import of goods is to be cut from 90 days to just 30 days under the terms of the incoming Thai Customs Law. Scheduled to come into effect on 13 November this year, the new legislation also specifies that all disputes between customs officials and importers / exporters must be settled within a three-year period. Currently, such disputes have been known to be prolonged for up to 20 years.
In other moves, the Thai government has capped the reward for information relating to smuggled or duty-evaded goods at Baht 5 million (about US$151,000). Discussions, meanwhile, are continuing with regard to streamlining customs clearance procedures between Thailand and a number of neighbouring countries, including Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
