VIETNAM: Self-Certification Introduced for Quality and Origin of Food Imports

Businesses are to be permitted to self-certify the country of origin and quality of imported food items, while confirming that they comply with Vietnam’s food safety requirements. Previously, all imported foodstuffs, food additives and food processing ingredients were subject to compulsory inspection with regard to quality and safety compliance.

While these new regulations remove the inspection requirement for 95% of all food products, certain items still need to be registered with the Ministry of Health prior to their import, including medicinal health foods, dietary supplements and nutritional products for children aged up to 36 months.

Additionally, the customs authority still retains the right to conduct a routine inspection of any imported foodstuff. Any such procedure, however, must be completed within three working days rather than seven as previously permitted. Similarly, the processing time for more in-depth technical inspections has been cut from 10 to seven working days.
