China Enacts E-Bike Safety Standards
A new set of mandatory national standards relating to the production, sale and use of electric bicycles (e-bikes) is to come into effect as of 15 April this year.
Among its key stipulations are the following:
- A strengthening of the administration of the China Compulsory Certification (CCC) system as it relates to e-bikes, including enhanced oversight of the relevant certification bodies and production enterprises in order to ensure that products meet the required standards and that all non-compliant e-bikes do not secure CCC endorsement or are subsequently offered for sale
- The destruction of all non-CCC-compliant e-bikes, while also assuring that no restrictions are imposed on the sale of imported CCC-compliant e-bikes
The new standards – The Safety Technical Specification on Electric Bicycles (GB 17761-2018) – were jointly-announced by the State Administration for Market Regulation, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Ministry of Public Security.
