China Issues Comprehensively Updated National Medical Insurance Drug Catalogue

China has released the first comprehensive update to its National Drug Catalogue for Basic Medical Insurance, Work-Related Injury Insurance and Maternity Insurance since it was first published in 2000.  This new edition includes all drugs that have been approved by the National Medical Products Administration in the interim period, while those that have been superseded, seen as having been regularly abused or found to have questionable efficacy have been deleted.

Divided into five categories, the Catalogue has sections dedicated to Western drugs, Chinese patent medicine, the agreed contract duration of negotiated drug prices, approved herbal medicine extractions and a glossary of explanatory notes. It also details the medical insurance payment ceiling for a number of commonly administered drugs.

This new edition was jointly compiled and published by the National Healthcare Security Administration and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
