China Releases 2019 Health Foods Naming Directory

The State Administration for Market Regulation has issued the Health Foods Naming Directory (2019 Edition), setting out guidelines for health food product name registration and filing in China. The main points of the directory, released on 12 November 2019, are:

1. The components of the health food name should be arranged in the order of trademark name, generic name and attribute

  • ‘Trademark name’ means that health foods must use a trademark registered according to law, or an unregistered trademark that accords with the provisions of the Trademark Law
  • ‘Generic name’ shows the properties of the principal raw materials, etc
  • ‘Attribute name’ shows the dosage form or other attributes of food classification

2. Basic principles for the naming of health foods

  • Compliance with relevant Chinese laws and regulations
  • Each product must have a unique name
  • The name must reflect the true nature of the product, be concise and easy to understand, and accord with common Chinese language usage so that it can be easily recognised or recalled by consumers
  • The name must not have anything to do with disease prevention and therapeutic effects and must not mislead consumers
