China Toughens Up Health Food Ingredients Regime

Under the terms of new measures set to come into force on 1 October this year, all ingredients listed in the Health Food Raw Materials Directory – with the exception of certain specified vitamins / minerals – must comply with the following requirements:

  • Have an established track record of being regularly used in foodstuffs / registered health foods in China and overseas to the extent that its safety is considered a matter of record and beyond dispute
  • Its defined benefits are specified in the current edition of the Health Functions Directory
  • Its dosage, proportional benefits, processing and testing can be standardised to ensure quality and efficacy commensurate with its directory-defined counterpart

Full details of the measures can be found in the Administrative Measures on Health Food Raw Materials Directory and Health Functions Directory, as recently issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation.
