China Unveils Blueprint for Boosting Hainan as a Tourist Destination
Further details of plans to enhance Hainan’s status as international tourism destination have been announced. Among the proposed moves is an increase in the range and quantity of duty-free shopping goods available, the introduction of visa-free travel for cruise passengers and the development of sporting attractions.
The plans were announced by the National Development and Reform Commission and form part of the Implementation Plan for Building Hainan Province into an International Tourism Consumption Centre. With the aim of reinventing Hainan as a high quality international tourism development demonstration zone, the strategy sees the province established as a tourism centre by 2025 and as a truly global destination by 2035.
Among the specific measures to be adopted are the following:
- The introduction of more duty-free shopping incentives for travellers leaving the island, an increase in the duty-free shopping allowance, as well as a further expansion of the range of duty-free goods available
- A broadening of the available range of international tourism options, including granting a 15-day visa-free stay to foreign tourists entering China as part of a cruise-based vacation. The existing restrictions on yacht tourism will also be eased, while the related immigration procedures will be streamlined.
- Promoting the integrated development of sports and tourism, including nurturing the development of water sports, horse-racing and air sports events. Steps will also be taken to explore the feasibility of developing a sports lottery and large-scale international lottery events
