Guangdong Announces 2018 Water Pollution Control Priorities

The Guangdong Provincial Environmental Protection Department recently issued its 2018 Work Plan for the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution. This forms a constituent part of The Three-year Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pollution in Guangdong Province (2018-2020), as well as a number of other related initiatives.

Among the priorities identified in the plan is ensuring that at least 81.7% of the surface water of the whole province is of above-average quality, while the proportion of inferior Class V water is less than 7% of the total. At the same time, every effort is to be made to ensure that the quality of the centralised drinkable water sources for all cities and counties at the prefecture level and above remains consistently at the required standard. Additionally, in the case of the built-up areas in cities at the prefecture level or above, 80% or more of all contaminated water bodies will be eliminated, while no less than 90% of such bodies in the built-up areas of Guangzhou and Shenzhen will be eliminated.
