Guangdong Rolls Out Electric Self-balancing Scooter Industry Standard

China will adopt its first electric self-balancing scooter industry standard on 1 January 2017 after its release on 12 September this year along with the creation of a "Made in Guangdong" label to regulate the industry’s behaviour.

The first domestic electric self-balancing scooter industry standard - the Guangdong Provincial Standard (DB44/T1884-2016) was drafted by the Guangdong Testing Institute of Product Quality Supervision to nail down various quality problems with such vehicles, said Liang Zhiyong, an engineer of the institute. Liang was speaking at a press conference held by the self-balancing vehicle branch of the Guangdong Electric Vehicle Association on 25 November 2016.

Liang said that the standard made reference to most of the well-known domestic enterprises and technical institutions, with testing in five aspects of vehicle performance, battery safety, electrical safety, mechanical safety and usage environments, integrating foreign safety standards (UL2272) and domestic self-balancing vehicle performance requirements.

Guangdong Electric Vehicle Association Secretary-General Lan Shiyou said that products carrying the "Made in Guangdong" quality mark must be manufactured in the Guangdong region by production facilities that have the electric bicycle production licence and are ISO9001 certified. All suppliers of certified enterprises must file for record with the Guangdong Electric Vehicle Association and meet the requirements of Guangdong’s local standards.
