Hainan Releases Seafood Catering Service Guidelines

Hainan province recently promulgated the Seafood Catering Service Guidelines and the Classification and Evaluation of Star-Rated Seafood Catering. These two local standards should help improve the quality of products, services and management of seafood catering operations and effectively protect the rights and interests of customers.

Good food, mainly good seafood, ranks top in tourist spending in Hainan. The income of seafood stalls exceeded one-third of the total income of restaurants in Hainan last year. However, instances such as overcharging and ripping off customers are common because the industry is still at an early stage of development and lacks the necessary management and service guidelines.

In promulgating these two local standards, Hainan hopes to strengthen quality supervision over the service process through better control of hardware and software standards, including the services and safety management of seafood restaurants. Detailed provisions have also been drawn up for the licensing, operational requirements and management of catering enterprises as well as the complaint handling procedures.
