PRD Set to Have World’s Most Advanced Information Infrastructure by 2020

By 2020, the Pearl River Delta region is set to have the world’s most advanced information infrastructure, while the whole of Guangdong will have high-speed fibre-optic internet connections and both Guangzhou and Shenzhen will benefit from early access to the new 5G mobile network protocol.

These ambitious goals form part of the Guangdong Provincial Government’s recently-issued Implementation Plan for Expanding and Upgrading Information Consumption (2018-2020), which seeks to promote the integrated application of internet technologies, big data, artificial intelligence and other next-generation information technologies throughout the consumer sector, with a particular focus on expanding multi-layered, network-based, intelligent and customised information usage by mid-to-high-end users.

In line with this, it is also envisaged that, within two years, there will be more than 20 million 4K TV households in the province, with the value of the local information economy in the region of RMB1.5 trillion, while an annual growth rate in excess of 15% will subsequently be sustained.
