Shanghai Looks to Take a Lead in AI Development

The Shanghai Municipal Government has issued new guidelines relating to research into artificial intelligence (AI), with the ultimate aim of ensuring this next-generation technology forms an integral part of the city’s future economic and social development. Produced as part of the AI@SH (Smart Shanghai) project, the guidelines have been designed to establish Shanghai as one of China’s leading centres for AI development by 2020, while seeking to harness this technology as a means of boosting innovation-driven development and facilitating overall economic upgrade. This would see the city take a lead role in pioneering AI-based innovation strategies, while also functioning as a national hub for the AI sector, with a particular focus on showcasing the application of all related technologies.

Six areas, in particular, have been designated as priorities:

  1. Developing enhanced man-machine collaboration as a means of upgrading the manufacturing sector
  2. Improving data analysis in order to boost financial and commercial innovation
  3. Refining pattern recognition software as way of optimising urban management
  4. Enhancing decision aids in order to heighten the quality and efficiency of public services
  5. Focusing on intelligent recognition technology in order improve the efficiency of transportation and shipping services
  6. Facilitating further research into cognitive computing as a way of delivering targeted, inclusive health care
