NGO ChemSec Promotes Safe Alternatives to Hazardous Chemicals
ChemSec, a non-profit NGO, has launched The Marketplace, a website which aims to offer a digital platform for suppliers and purchasers of alternative solutions to hazardous chemicals. All solutions to hazardous chemicals are encouraged: chemical substitutes as well as new technical solutions that negate the use of hazardous substances altogether.
Although the motivation of companies to replace hazardous chemicals in products is growing, the low visibility of safer alternatives remains a hindrance. The marketplace is intended to raise the visibility of safe alternatives to hazardous chemicals and to provide a market opportunity for producers of safer alternatives. It is directed at both innovative companies looking to make their chemicals management more sustainable and companies that offer solutions that can be used to replace hazardous chemicals.
The marketplace only provides a forum for contact and for displaying the products available on the market. No transactions take place on the website.
Producers of alternative solutions can post advertisements free of charge, presenting their safe alternatives to harmful substances to potential buyers. The companies that advertise on the marketplace are individually responsible for providing correct information; the marketplace does not conduct an investigation into advertised products.
Downstream users can search the marketplace database to find an alternative product that corresponds to their needs. They can also post requests.
The marketplace offers advanced search options allowing one to search for specifics (whether an alternative material or chemical substitute, or a technical or process solution). There are also 28 distinct sectors of use. These include manufacture of textiles, leather, fur; manufacture of bulk, large scale chemicals (including petroleum products), fine chemicals and household chemicals; manufacture of plastic products; manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products; electrical equipment; general manufacturing, e.g. machinery, equipment, vehicles, other transport equipment; scientific research and development; manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products; food contact materials; packaging materials; toys and children’s products.
ChemSec plans to further develop the website in order to transform it into a “one-stop shop” for companies. ChemSec intends to include continuous updates, global regulatory news and real life events. ChemSec also intends to introduce a reporting system in the future that will allow users to alert the provider of any non-compliant advertisements.
