Argentina Rescinds Regulation Requiring Verification of Mandatory Labelling Requirements

The Argentinean government has rescinded an October 2015 regulation that established a new system to verify compliance with mandatory labelling requirements for food, beverages, cosmetics, personal care products and household cleaning products intended for human handling and consumption. That regulation required labels of covered products to undergo compliance verification by the Interior Commerce Undersecretariat’s Fair Trade Directorate prior to their commercialisation in Argentina. The government notes that rather than protecting consumers in an efficient manner, excessive and redundant procedures unnecessarily hinder the commercialisation of products in Argentina. This action is in line with on-going efforts by the Macri administration to eliminate burdensome hurdles on international trade and generally reduce economic distortions.
