Brazil Prohibits Certain Toy Imports

Brazil’s National Institute of Technology, Normalisation and Industrial Quality (INMETRO) has issued a regulation (Directive 99/2016) prohibiting the certification and commercialisation in Brazil of toys known as AcquaDots and Bindeez, as well as other yet-to-be-identified products containing the chemical substance 1,4 butanodiol. Like products not containing this substance will be allowed to be commercialised in Brazil with a clear warning that the product is intended for children younger than three years of age. To obtain the required certification the manufacturer or supplier must submit a declaration that its product does not contain 1,4 butanodiol together with a technical report issued by a test laboratory.
