Brazilian Government Restructures its Economic and Trade Functions

As expected, effective 1 January the new Brazilian government established a new super-ministry of the economy with seven special secretariats: finance; federal revenue; foreign trade and international affairs; privatisation and disinvestment; productivity, employment and competitiveness; bureaucracy reduction, management and digital government; and social security and work. At the same time, the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services has effectively ceased to exist (although its website continues to be updated) and its functions have been assumed by the new secretariats of foreign trade and international affairs and productivity, employment and competitiveness. Marcos Troyjo, a Brazilian economist, entrepreneur, social scientist, diplomat and writer who until recently had worked as co-director of Columbia University’s BRICLab, will head the secretariat of foreign trade and international affairs.
