Chile and Mainland China Working to Implement Electronic Origin Certification

Chilean authorities indicate that they continue to work with their mainland Chinese counterparts on an electronic origin certification system under the Chile-China Free Trade Agreement. This system will allow the two sides to exchange certificates of origin through electronic means, which is expected to streamline the issuance of these certificates as well as export procedures in general, prevent fraud and facilitate bi-lateral trade. In a recent working meeting held in Beijing, the two sides discussed a number of technical issues related to information technology, optimal security and the feasibility of data interchange in an effort to develop an ambitious electronic origin certification system. Chilean and mainland Chinese officials are also working to identify the key data elements in a certificate of origin that should be shared electronically.
