DEA to Restrict Imports of Synthetic Substance

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has announced its intent to issue an order temporarily including the synthetic cathinone N-1-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-2-(ethylamino)-1-pentanone (N-ethylpentylone, ephylone) into schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. The temporary scheduling order will impose the regulatory requirements under the CSA on the importation, exportation, manufacture, distribution, reverse distribution, possession, research and conduct of instructional activities, and chemical analysis of this substance as well as the administrative, civil and criminal penalties that apply to persons who fail to comply with such requirements or otherwise violate the CSA with respect to this substance. This order will be effective no earlier than 13 July and remain in effect for two years, with a possible extension of one year.
